By:- Dwane O'Dwyer. (Australia.)
G'day from down-under. It's been a while since I last wrote an article
for STEN - I've been very busy at work etc - but at last I've found some
time.
The last time I wrote, I mentioned that one of our ST distributors had
some trouble with Atari Australia and the advertising saga. Well, the
situation hasn't changed, except they're now having even more problems.
The latest hitch involves the supply of STE's to the stores. What
started the problem was that there have been quite a few 1040STEs
returned to our local store due to faulty disk drives, and when the
distributor tried to exchange these computers for new ones, they were
told either that there was none in stock or that the computer was on it's
way. One case that I know of was that a customer had to wait 6 weeks for
his replacement 1040STE. And you thought that Falcons were hard to come
by! Anyway the customer involved is now the happy owner of a brand new
computer (with a good disk drive).
I've had the opportunity to visit Adelaide, South Australia. This city
is the capital of South Australia, and I thought it might be an idea to
check out the local ST scene. What a contrast to the other ST scenes
that I have seen. There are several good Atari dealers in Adelaide,
including one called Multilearn. This is by no means a huge ST dealer,
but they had a good range of software and wait for it.... a FALCON.
Yes. They had a 4Mb/65Mb Falcon on display and even had a few to sell.
One of the salesmen, Chris, sat down with me on the Falcon and showed me
what it could do. He spent a great deal of time showing and explaining
the machine to me. I was most greatful to him for the opportunity.
While I was there, I managed to get a new mouse (GENIUS TRIPLE MOUSE).
This may not seem much to users in the U.K., but down-under, it is a
major feat to find such a piece of hardware. They can be very hard to
obtain. By the way, if anyone out there can tell me how I can use the
joystick while this mouse is plugged in, I would be most greatful. The
joystick just refuses to operate while the mouse is plugged in!
Anyway, back to Adelaide. I managed to talk to one or two other people
involved in the ST scene while I was there. One of these people was an
ex-Sewersoft programmer. He said that due to the ST's poor acceptance in
Australia AND a little bit of undue pressure from "A person in
Authority", he no longer owned an ST. This goes to explain the lack of
new Sewer disks over the past 12 months. When I questioned him about
reproducing any of Sewer's own work, he said that any form of duplicating
their work was fine by all at Sewer.
I was also lucky enough to get hold of a copy of FEEDBACK, the Adelaide
Atari Computer Club's magazine. This publication is a good quality
magazine which I found informative and interesting. Members are
encouraged to submit articles in whatever form they wish to use, and
therefore the magazine has no hard and fast layout. Membership is fairly
small at 127 members, but the club has the support of Multilearn (see
above) and a couple of other ST retailers. The club meets twice a month,
once at each of two venues at the opposite ends of town. Members can
place advertisments and notices if they wish. Some of the articles are a
shot in the ribs at ATARI, and have quite a humorous flavour. They seem
to be a very active user group and at just $30.00 per year membership, it
seems to be quite good value. Feedback is a bi-monthly publication.
Perhaps it's just a coincidence, but PARAGON computers in West Oz have
just released a selection of 50 or so titles at the great saver price of
$9.95! As I reported last time I wrote in STEN, software prices are
ridiculous in the land down-under, but this seems to be slowly changing.
Maybe some of the U.K.'s budget games are filtering through to Oz. We
live in hope.
WORLD DOMINATION, who I reported last time as having a good selection of
ST Shareware, have run into problems. One of their ST CD's has gone
bung. This effectively means that they now have only half the number of
Shareware titles available now. They hope to get it replaced soon, but
this has been the position for the past four months!
The FALCON has landed in Australia, But only at the bigger ST dealers.
Our local dealers are saying that it should be readily available by
November, but we have all heard that before. Software is starting to
filter through to the same dealers as well with six titles available from
PARAGON computers.
I would like to take this opportunity to invite any ST Public Domain or
Shareware Authors to send their work to me. The problem with PD and
Shareware is that it takes ages for it to filter through to Oz. As I run
a *small* PD library, I think it may be benificial for anyone who writes
a program to send it to me. I will place it in my own library and pass
it on to another library called IRATA GRAPHICS who have over 2500 disks
in their collection. All contributors *will* be answered. I also
distribute STEN in Australia, and I'm always on the lookout for other new
software.
SEE YA LATER, MATES,
DWANE O'DWYER.
